On this date in 1916 (Nov. 7th), Jeannette Rankin was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives from the state of Montana, the first woman elected to Congress. Jeannette was a progressive feminist and an absolute pacifist. She took office in 1917 just in time to vote against the U.S. entering World War I.
