They lived in the mountains

Sevier County, Great Smoky Mountain National Park, Tennessee, 1933...

It is estimated that more than 2,400 former homesites can be found in the park. 70% of these homesites have been identified, but more remain.

Other homes that have curtains, or not, in their windows. Owners standing outside is a familiar way that the photographer could immortalize them.

Unknown elders with their opinions held between them. Their patterned jersey dresses remind me of what my grandmother wore in the 40s and 50s. Where did those dresses all go? Must have deteriorated, because a few cotton print dresses do remain.

  1. People in & beside their homes - a good match to the prompt. And I absolutely LOVE the painting you've shared of the woman dancing amongst the flowers - pansies maybe? - against a rising or setting sun. Beautiful.

  2. The stare of the three ladies makes me wonder whether the photographer got away alive after he shot this picture.
And the painting is beautiful indeed!

  3. After the cold spell of the last few weeks I can't help but admire the fortitude of the old mountain folk who lived in such handmade homes and must have endured far colder winters than we do now. The dresses of the three women remind me of the kind of dresses my great grandmother wore. She was a country girl, too, and in countless family photos spanning a several decades she always seems to be wearing the same dress. Her idea of fashion was practical and frugal. I have one of her braided rugs, easily over a 100 years old now, that was made from rags and fabric scraps like that dress material.

  4. I found it fascinating to see the early homes that many people constructed for themselves . There is so much character revealed in that image of the three women - I have one rather similar from the 195os of my mother and friends in their hats and clutching their handbags- not altogether flattering!
