Happy birthday, Florence Nightingale (May 12, 1820 - Aug. 13, 1910)
Social reformer. Critic of organized religion. Recognized as the founder of modern nursing. On one occasion, Florence was attending to a dying prostitute who was afraid she was going to hell. She said to Florence: "Pray God that you may never be in the despair I am in at this moment." Florence reassured her, saying: "Oh my girl, are you not now more merciful than the God you think you are going to? Yet the real God is far more merciful than any human creature ever was or can ever imagine." Florence was never married, having rejected at least four proposals. We know from her writings that her most intimate relationships were with women. Born in Florence, Italy. Died in London, England. Buried in the graveyard of St. Margaret Church in East Wellow, Hampshire, England.
